Long Distance Relationships

Let's talk about long distance relationships for a minute. Ian and I have been in a long distance relationship for over 2 years now, and let's be honest, there are times when it really sucks. I mean, not only are we in a long distance relationship, but he's also in the military. There's no way around it, and I'm not going to lie to you all and say it's sunshine and roses all the time. I feel like the question I get asked the most often is, "how do you all do it? I don't think that I could." Sure you can! Anyone can do it if the other person in the relationship means the world to you. About how we do it, we honestly just do. Lots of commuting between New York and Tennessee, lots of time in the airport, and lots of Face time dates definitely help! I know that's not an awesome answer, but we just make it work because we really care about each other, and we know that there is an eventual end date to the distance. I know we are definitely not a unique situation, there are a ton of people in long distance relationships that I know personally. I just know that there is a lot I've learned from being in a long distance relationship, and I honestly feel like it's allowed me to grow in the past few years.

Distance definitely requires a lot of independence, compromise, and sacrifice on everyone's part, but it can also have a few perks. Like I said above, being in a long distance relationship the past few years has really allowed me to gain a sense of independence while I was in college. I always had time to get my homework done, in addition to work and internships, which actually allowed me to graduate a year early. Ian and I also get to travel a lot, I've actually been to New York 7 times this year (so far). I also always look forward to the next time I get to see him. This time has also allowed me to focus on myself and figure out things I like to do. We both see this as being extremely beneficial, because it's allowed me to gain a sense of independence and know what I like, before we have to start moving every few years because of our military life. I've also been able to think of lots of activities that I was us to learn to do together because we've been apart so long. Trust me, y'all are going to love some of our goals!

With that being said, even though there are a few perks, more often than not, I miss him being here with me. I often struggle with feeling like we've missed out on being a "normal couple" at times, especially this time of year when everyone's going to the pumpkin patch and dressing up for Halloween together. You all don't know how excited I am to be together with no more separation, and we're getting closer to being there every day!

Let me know if you all have any questions about being in a long distance relationship, or your experience in a similar situation, and please know you're never alone!
